Five very random memories

1) Grandma ALWAYS had something simmering in the crock pot.  Does anyone remember what soups she cooked or maybe even have a recipe?
2) I remember the sparkly ceiling paint in the living room.  What was that stuff?  I want some!
3) I also remember the brass bells that were out in the dining room.  Does anyone know if they were Grandma's or Grandpa's?  Were they heirlooms or something that one of them collected?
4) I vaguely remember the dolls that Grandma kept in the upstairs guest bedroom.
5) I remember the dress ups downstairs!  :)
I distinctly recall fighting with several people over who was going to wear the silky blue top and skirt.
Plus, remember those little red elfin shoes with the gold trim?
Whatever happened to the dress ups?  And where did they come from?  Were they old clothes that actually belonged to grandma?

What do you remember?

  1. haha I was definitely one of those unnamed people who fought over the silky blue/green dress! haha I always ended up wearing some ill-fitting cast-off :) I remember all of the things you mentioned except the dolls in the guest bedroom...I don't remember those...

  2. Your memories make me just laugh and miss Grandmas house so much. I am most positive I fought over that silky dress. Wasnt there a purse or a necklace we liked too?? She kept the dress ups in a dresser in the downstairs bathrooom and would get so mad if we didnt put them back right!! =}
I have a mountain of memories . here a just a few... grandma giving us perms we never liked, having to "sit in a chair" when you got in trouble, grandmas amazing brownies that she kept in a special drawer in the kitchen (very fond memories of sneaking some) listening to kids records and reading along with the book (that cabinet down in the rec room is where she kept it with all the puzzles, baton etc.) the water fountain in the back yard, always wondering what was in Uncle Brians room and my all time fav...... devoring her canned raspberries and homemade jam and huckle berry pie
one more.... remember all the parades we would go too. I remember one time we were walking to the parade and Katy found a dollar on a leaf. do you remmber that. I think it was near that really cool house by the library. The one that is victorian looking.

  3. Was there really jewelry in the dress-ups?!? I remember purses because of the time Rebecca threw a clutch at the door and it stuck there embedded by the clasp like a dart. :)
I do not remember a fountain - does anyone a picture or know if it was something else that Grandpa built?
There were hidden dessert items in the kitchen, for real?! What drawer!?!
I remember the kitchen because of the I remember the wheat grinder. I flipped it on once and almost peed my pants.
I remember the coke girl hanging on the wall. Diana just found one of those at a thrift store. I wonder where Grandma got it.
I also remember crystals in the dining room. Was there a chandelier in there or something? I don't remember one.

  4. Well first of all, of course there was a chandelier above the dining table, it was that huge pink one with the crystals hanging off of it haha I had completely forgotten about the drinking fountain, but I know what you're talking about and the firepit out back we would always roast hotdogs on and make our own roasting sticks from the branches of the willow tree out back. I also remember the rickety playset, the green house and bees (the bees always really scared me) but I loved the honey!! And I remember when they had goats because we got to feed them bottles (and also because sometimes at breakfast the milk had goat hair in it blek!) :) I also remember the parades and being so jealous when the dollar bill was found (I didn't know it was katy?) I remember there being some jewelry and all the monopoly money and hard paint chip cards we would pretend were credit cards :) And the time we found out that the sewing room had an attic in it after telling a bunch of ghost stories about attics haha

  5. 1. Mom's soups like a lot of her cooking was whatever she had and probably had some basic guidelines but was mostly a little different each time.

    2. The sparkly ceiling was sprayed on. I doubt you could easily find that anymore.

    3. I'm unsure who has the set of bells that hung on the wall. I thought Barbara did if not Brenda may have them. We have the single bell with the handle on it. That was originally in the office in the motel and people would ring it if no one was in the office. The handle unscrews and at one point somebody tightened it too tight and twisted the handle.

    4. I can't tell you much about the dolls other than they were there.
    5. The dress ups were mostly from yard sales or wherever she could find them. There were a pair of cowboy chaps (black and white simulated cowhide) that originally had a matching vest. Those were mine from when I was shorter.

  6. There was a drinking fountain in the backyard. Brian may remember where dad got that from but it was basically just a pipe, I believe wired to a board with a drinking fountain push button top on it.

  7. I remember the two dollar bill hanging by the phone. I vaguely remember the story behind it, but if someone remembers it really well it would be cool to hear again. When mom was teaching nursing students they gave her a gift one year of like $100 in two dollar bills and she gave each of us girls two as a reminder of that story. I would also remember having grandmas cracked wheat (?) hot cereal in the mornings. I would love to know how to make that! And breakfast on Saturday's at grandmas house with sour dough pancakes, home made syrup, eggs, etc. That was a great tradition! Ruined regular pancakes and syrup for me but I'm ok with that. :)

  8. When did Grandpa start keeping bees? Did the Brown family always have fresh honey? Or did he start that later after the kids were grown.
Honestly, I'd totally forgotten about the bees until Diana's post. Also, the paint the chips - I do remember that! Hilarious! Remember the Darth Vader mask? And the little yellow shopping cart? I'd forgotten about the baton and the fires in the back yard.
Nikki, the old the Victorian mansion by the library was called the Purple Sage. I think it's been fixed up in the last couple of years.
Ha ha ha! - I have a picture of the Ream mansion - I'll dig around my boxes and see if I can find it.
Do you remember story time at the library?
And free movies at the theater for Christmas? Holy cow! Remember the giant bags of peanuts and candy from Santa Claus? Where was that? Was it in the King's building? For some reason, I have a vague impression that Santa was in a building on the North - and not South - side of the street....
AHHHH!!! Sledding on M-Hill!! Diana, I would really like to hear - in your own words - how it is that, although you claimed not to be able to steer a sled, you hit at least one person every trip down the hill...because honestly, it seemed like you were aiming...! In fact, I'd say you managed to hit at least two people each run. Frankly, it seems suspicious. Do you have any idea how much it hurts to be hit in the shins with a little runner sled? They're like torpedoes!
Remember the ice rink and the warming hut??? Aunt Beverly told me a hair-raising story about two kids who collided on the ice and one ended up with the other's blade stuck in their head. I'd say that just about was the end of skating for me...
Brian used to make ice rinks in the back yard - does anyone have picture??

  9. Does anyone else remember mushroom hunting with Uncle Brian?
He taught us to cook the puffball mushrooms.
    That was really fun.

  10. Mom says that one of the dolls in the guest bedroom was an Anne of Green Gables doll. Aunt Brenda gave it to Grandma.
I remember a blonde doll as well. But mom and I couldn't remember anything more specific than that.
